My painting has been influenced by where I've been, who I've known, what I've learned and what I've loved. My apprenticeships in the 1980's with painter Stewart Hitch and art critic Barbara Rose, along with other artists in the New York Art scene influenced the direction and style of my painting...from which I am still evolving today. My work refers to a search for beauty. In my approach I attempt to be direct, if not crude, and emotional or immediate at first, then as I "build" my layers a certain amount of conscious decision making takes over. The end result is a moment captured and suspended in time, surrounding and possessing that total image of my expression -- the collision of conscious and subconscious activities.

"Flaherty’s paintings show some affinity for recognitions that belong to a fluid spectrum ranging from pure abstraction to pure figuration. As we see his current efforts, we recognize that Flaherty has pieced together, in concision and colorful clarity, a language of art whose focus is startling in its beauty". —Jonathan Goodman
